Latest Question to the Language Doctor
Q: What are the top and bottom line?
A: In financial terms, the bottom line is the figure which shows a company's total profit or loss. In contrast, the top line is the amount of money received before costs have been taken away, in other words, revenue.

If a company is focusing on its top line, it is interested in making money or generating revenue. If a company is focusing on its bottom line, however, they are more likely to be cost-cutting in order to improve profits.

"Bottom line" is also used outside of its financial context to refer to the most important reason for doing something.

For example, "I don't care about winning any friends - the bottom line is that I am successful."
